What is “World Food Day Month”?
In Japan, World Food Day Month began in 2008. This is a period where NGOs/NPOs and United Nations organizations take the lead in disseminating flyers and websites about hunger and food issues, and holding events that are easy to participate in.
The aim of World Food Day Month is to "create an opportunity for people who want to do something to take the first step." Currently, enough food is produced for approximately 7 billion people around the world, but more than one in ten of them, or 811 million people, do not have enough to eat. In order to change this current situation, we need to solve problems such as food loss, and we need the cooperation of people all over the world.
The goal of "zero hunger" is included in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. World Food Day Month is an opportunity for everyone to take action to achieve this goal.

The theme for 2021 is "We create the future - Better food production and improved nutrition lead to a better life and environment." The effects of the global pandemic that began in 2020 have led to the collapse of agricultural systems and a global economic recession, leading to increased food insecurity and inequality. We will focus on improving the agricultural and food systems that are being implemented to overcome these difficult circumstances.
An online event will be held on October 15th that will include lectures from companies and organizations that are actually working on improving agricultural and food systems, so if you are interested, please come and join us.

summary
Among the many issues raised in the SDGs, the food issue is one in particular that can be changed in our daily lives. Food loss can be improved by reducing waste in daily shopping and cooking, and easy donation activities such as the "Onigiri Event" can help people around the world who are suffering from hunger.
If you want to start something but don't know where to start, please use this October as an opportunity to gather information and take action.
